The White Ribbon

Michael Haneke: The White Ribbon

Benedetta Masera

Michael Haneke's latest film, The White Ribbon has often been interpreted in our press as a film about the origins of Nazism. I think this interpretation is very simplistic and very comforting. And also a bit 'autoassolutoria. A group of children in the German countryside in 1914. The machine takes over the huge close-ups their faces straight, eyes property, blond hair carefully combed. Straight figurines, dressed in black, compact and tidy.
In the fresco are the figures in the background. The story follows the adults. They have no name, only their name name: Baron, the Pastor, the Physician, the Intendant. They are sometimes also called 'her father'. Nothing else. Baron and its three branches are no more or less the embodiment of power, and everything you need to do to keep it. The recipe for the farmers, is simple: just leave them out of work if necessary. No rebels, because the specter of starvation is far too close. In fact, the rebellion of a young peasant in the most total, leads to suicide as the only consequence of his father and the probable death by starvation of fratelli.Le women of all social classes are almost mute, we can barely hear his voice throughout the film. Are annihilated by the violence they see or have on children who suffer themselves, and to which they are unable to oppose in any way. They are unarmed, mute, at the mercy of men. Without scampo.Non is no room for rebellion and even for the escape. Those who attempt to rebel is brought back to obedience, or simply fades into nulla.Quale could be, therefore, the only weak point of the system where you move the iron characters? The children, their children, young minds, still intact. That for this to be dominated, folded. Among them is the blond and curly-haired son of the baron. Then the perfect children's pastor of the village. The daughter of a physician, with flashes of mischief in his eyes that it is almost impossible to blacks cogliere.Gli adults dealing with children if not to punish them, or abusing it. The aim is to inculcate in them the virtue of obedience. Because this is the white ribbon of the title, that the pastor is called 'the symbol of innocence and purity': obbedienza.E so children obey. And the cruelty that grow together obedience becomes increasingly disturbing. Why apply to the letter lessons: every breach of the rule must be eradicated at the root, and the sins of the fathers are visited upon the children. The trap is taken, there is no possibility of them riscatto.Te images lined up to march from there to about ten years, under the Brandenburg Gate, with his face towards the Führer. And can you imagine the little girls become big zealous to guard the prisoners of the camp sterminio.Ma not only this (as if it were not enough, for charity). Haneke is that whispers in his ear: do you really live in a different world? The world you live in is basically the same: those in power if he keeps it tight and make everyone else live in misery. And you have been taught to obey from piccolo.Siamo blackmail as the farmer who fears that the work be given to the following season. And they are still priests, and popes and mullahs to dictate the rules of life. And how dedicated this system is being carried out by everyone from victims and perpetrators, saved and drowned.
